Chris Summer

Chris Summer is one of our curators here at the Strand Gallery, if he is at the front desk feel free to say hello.

Born in London in 1979, Chris now lives in South Australia.
As a self-taught artist he uses unique techniques with charcoal & white ink to create realistic drawings to build his artworks up over many layers.
Each work takes between 100 to 200 hours & combines the 2 mediums together to get the best of each.

”I love working with the medium of charcoal for its ability to create both soft, transitional tones, as well as grainy and detailed texture. It also works with my desire for black & white artwork, when colour is absent, your experience with lighting, texture, detail & tone are all heightened and improved. It is this that makes black & white art & photography so emotionally engaging.”

Chris uses objects of nature, primarily Urchins & feathers, to create still-life artworks at increased scale to emphasise detail invisible to the eye, drawing attention to structure and form within a contemporary, minimalist composition.

Negative space is an important element to each composition, working on white paper it takes up to 7 layers of charcoal to achieve an empty & matte black background.

Chris Summer was a finalist in The Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize (SA) in 2022 & 2020, and the Muswellbrook Art Prize (NSW), 2021.
