Christine Lawrence

Christine was born in Adelaide, South Australia in 1951 and has been passionate about drawing and painting from a very early age. She trained as an art teacher at the South Australian School of Art and Western Teachers College, then taught art at Banksia Park and Craigmore high schools, first year painting at the Central School of art and finally became the Visual Arts teacher at Gilles Street Primary School for 18 years, with 17 classes a week, including 7 classes of newly arrived children from all over the world.

She always made time for her artwork and took part in numerous painting trips organised by David Dridan to the Flinders Ranges, the Gawler Ranges and Murndal in Victoria, with groups of artists including Geoff Wilson, Silvio Apponyi, Brian Seidel, Brian Dunlop, and Penny Dowie. Christine was part of the Strout Farm group that painted “en plein air” every Thursday in the Fleurieu landscape and included David Dridan, Geoff Wilson, Dave Dallwitz, Hugo Shaw and Lesley Redgate.

In 2016 Christine retired from teaching and moved to Wanarra station where she continues to paint, inspired by the vast and diverse landscape of Western Australia.

“I have always been a realist, fascinated by the magical illusions that can be created on the surface of the picture plane. Any subject can be a vehicle to study light, colour, form, space and detail…. Reality. I aim to capture the essence of that which has inspired me in the complexity and beauty of the natural world:

From the colour, texture and forms of the leaf litter to the vast spaces of the landscape. From the patterns, shapes and colours of reflections, to the constantly changing beauty of the sky. From the majestic structure and form of a tree to a simple still life. Painting provides a window for contemplation.”

Christine has had numerous solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions. Her paintings have been acquired for many corporate and private collections throughout the world and 11 pieces purchased by Artbank have found their way to prestigious locations.
