Mirjana Dobson

Mirjana Dobson is an emerging Australian contemporary ceramic artist with a curiosity for the beauty of our natural world. Her preoccupation interest lies in the complex ecology of our coral reefs and underwater ecosystems.

Fusing an abstract reference of marine plants, animals and bacteria, Mirjana constructs sculptural organisms that connect and confront the relationship we hold with Nature. The forms, textures and compositions found in the natural environment are used as design elements for her organic sculptures.

Although her ambiguous forms consider the complexity of all life forms, it is the fragility and delicate balance of nature that is the central and overriding theme in her work.

Nudibranch Series

This series of work evolved from my residency at The Heron Island Research Station on the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef in 2019. Immersing myself into the wonderous underwater world of the reef, I discovered much beauty that was often unseen from above the surface. I became fascinated with a species of marine animal called the Nudibranch due to their vivid colours, diverse textures and intricate patterns which resonated with something that was other worldly, even alien like. The size of a small fingernail, the nudibranch is a fragile and delicate animal that is rarely found and often unseen. This series of works were created to offer the viewer an opportunity to also discover the beauty and wonder of the Nudibranch.
