Yvette Jurevicius-Arnold

How do you describe your art practice today?

I am formally trained in illustration design, and enjoy creating precise, accurate and detailed work, with stylised realism. I have always had an innate passion for drawing and sketching, having been fortunate enough to spend 2 semesters teaching these subjects in Florence, Italy, while also studying sculpture and restoring ancient fresco.

My work as a published illustrator and secondary art teacher assisted me in exploring a variety of mediums, using different tools of trade, pencil, coloured pencils, inks and print making.

I love the crisp design contrast between positive and negative shapes and the subtle variation of tones from the use of black and white, so it was a natural progression for me to enjoy creating multi layered and spatial effects using Scraper Board and a scalpel. I also enjoy painting on canvas and silk, using bright acrylic paint to capture the beauty of colours that surround us in all their vast array.

What fascinates you about your choice of medium?

I enjoy the finely tuned scraping process used with Scraper Boards, that slowly turns a plain black piece of board into a sharply defined pattern revealing the contrasting whiteness beneath.  I find the whole process therapeutic and rewarding as the design I have in my mind, begins to emerge.  I have always loved drawing birds and flowers, sometimes creating my own bird designs amongst native foliage and flowers, with each completed design surprising me as it evolves over time.

What inspires you most and why?

I have a deep love and appreciation for the beauty of nature in all its forms, I particularly enjoy watching colourful native birds mingle amongst our natural world, within trees and on native bushes and flowers, it has always fascinated me. I am also inspired by patterns and textures, and enjoy exploring man made and naturally woven patterns, as well as fabric design from differing ethnic and eastern cultures.
