Fiona Heysen
Having been brought up in an artistic family, Fiona is completely self-taught, but had gentle suggestions and constructive criticism from her father Stefan (youngest son of Sir Hans Heysen), that helped sharpen her eye in observing the world, art and her own work.
Although influenced by her love of the Impressionists, she has developed her own style, always with an emphasis on good drawing combined with the ever constant importance of expressing light and air.
She has lived most of her life on the Fleurieu and so has always loved the sea and in particular the place where the water meets the land and the gloriousness of the resulting light, colours and reflections.
Fiona works mostly in oils and says,
“I love the silkiness and viscosity and malleability of oils. With oil it is like a meditation in a different time and space...where time slows down. But I love the equally silky but so much quicker, dynamic modern rush with acrylics. With acrylics it is a much quicker pace and rhythm and a feeling of sharpness and acuity.”
She has also recently been enjoying painting on silk and loving the way the paint flows on this different ground so suited to natural subjects.
