Bill Steele
I have worked all my life in the design and construction industries as an Architect, an Engineer, a Project Manager and in business - hence my interest in creating things.
I have been a sculptor since 2011, now I can let my imagination run wild and produce things that are quirky, unusual, funny, irreverant, whimisical and sometimes weird.
I work mainly in non-ferrous metals - copper, brass and stainless steel as they have wonderful colour, warmth and tactile qualities allowing me a lot of freedom.
I embrace two basic methods with my copper work. The first using regular sheet copper, oxy-acetelyne brazing and pop-rivets and the other, that I first saw in India, involving a wooden body clad in very thin copper shim fixed with brass pins. (the Indians use thin silver sheet).
For my more whimsical pieces I use anything that takes my fancy from driftwood to old bits of plastic and metal. I like to see the potential in some mundane item and then create something special by adding other bits and pieces.
I also do bronze casting at Australian Bronze in Sydney.
