Simon Lownsborough
Simon is an established artist who has worked across disciplines from graphic design to painting and object making. Since 2017 he has been working with metal, refining his approach to wearables and small-scale sculpture.
He has participated in exhibitions including a solo show during SALA in 2021. Simon is currently undertaking a mentorship with Julie Blyfield to develop his practice and explore new territories.
Metal is a fascinating material to work with. It has surprising plasticity, and it is this quality that Simon exploits to forge and fabricate work. He finds deep satisfaction in forging an object from a raw ingot with nothing but a hammer and mandrel. He looks for organic qualities that are resolved and impart an inevitability. This can include carving wood or bone and incorporating other materials such as plastics.
