Joanna Poulson
It was wonderful having Joanna’s first show at the gallery which was her ‘Blurry Botanicals’. It was very well received by our local community and presented a refreshing alternative to our usual offerings. Joanna is a delight to work with, like all of the other artists in this exhibition, she has a wonderful sense of humour and enthusiasm and this is reflected in her work. In addition to her beautiful paintings of flora, Joanna was commissioned to paint a scene of a family out hiking, which was stunning.
Joanna is a total realist painter working in oils on exceptional quality linen. There are many steps to her process, she works from a multitude of photographs and studies these intensely before even getting out her oils paints. She wants to be sure that it is a commitment that she feels sure of and a connection to the subject matter even before she prepares the first drawing and the canvas. She has to be emotionally engaged to an image before she considers a subject worthy of painting. She is drawn to intense colour, especially bright colours which can lift the mood of a space and the response of the viewer who gets to experience her paintings. She is skilled and mixing and making colours, it is instinctual for Joanna and she relates it to learning a new language. She is constantly refining the best way to apply paint to achieve the outcome that she wants and believes that there is always an opportunity to learn more when working with oil paint.
Joanna is inspired by other artists, friends, family, nature and animals as they make her feel ‘supported, challenged, loved, appreciated, grateful and invigorated.’
