Monika Morgenstern
As a visual artist I have explored many different ways of expressing the numinous/mystical in my practice. I have been working with light and its effect in many different media including painting, digital prints, lightboxes, photography and as video projections for the last 5 years. I hope to free the spiritual experience from accepted institutional structures and traditions and explore how the numinous manifests in the general population, decolonising it from its cultural/historical baggage.
I was born near Cologne in Germany and currently live and work in Strathalbyn, South Australia on Kaurna land. I graduated from Adelaide Central School of Art, Adelaide in 2014 with honours and received an associate diploma of arts from Swinburne University Melbourne in 1993.
Since finishing my degree I have been consistently shortlisted for prestigious art prizes, most notably The Heysen Prize on three occasions, and the SALA Contemporary Art Prize in 2019.
