Opens June 10th, long weekend 2023
The Strand Gallery is very pleased to exhibit new work by Nick Hannaford. These engaging multimedia works tell stories about Nick and his grandfather, Sir James Holden who used his line of sight from the sea to prominent landmarks. The point where they intersected was a secret location of his fishing grounds.
Nick learned much from his grandfather and considers these works to be a collaboration with him. He has included original maps and notes from James.
This exhibition was opened by Dr. Bindi MacGill, who shared a childhood with Nick, exploring the sea and landscape on Kangaroo Island. Bindi is a Senior Lecturer in Arts education at the University of South Australia and is a contemporary artist.
Both Nick and Bindi, share a passion for their family, nature, the sea, Indigenous culture, art and creativity.
Nick’s overview:
My Grandfather, Sir James Holden, was a keen fisherman. Before GPS technology he would use his line-of-sight from the sea to align landmarks on the coastal dunes area with other prominent landmarks on the cliff tops and hills in the distance. The point where the two lines intersected was the secret location where his fishing grounds lay. These works reveal the pages from my grandfather’s original scratchings and maps combined with sketches and drawings of my own. Together, these works are a collaboration that explores my memories of him as a grandfather, including the days at sea with him and my father Ian Hannaford when I was a young boy.
