Opening Easter weekend 2022, the Strand Gallery is very proud to present new work by James McFarlane in his first solo exhibition ‘Act One: A Brush with James’.
The Strand Gallery is proud to present new work by James McFarlane in his first solo exhibition. James has been working exceptionally hard on his art practice and has taken his painting to an entire new level. This exhibition is the culmination of two years of work and consists of unique and intriguing still life oil paintings. They are testament to James’ dedication and are rich with colour, capturing textures and layers with engaging compositions. This exhibition is an opportunity to make an early acquisition of paintings that we believe will go onto be collectable and investable examples of the genre.
James was born in Mildura, Victoria and grew up in the Riverland in South Australia. As a young adult he relocated to Adelaide and began employment in the establishment clubs of Adelaide. It was here, surrounded by both traditional and contemporary fine art that his appreciation for painting was realised. James would assist with the task of hanging exhibitions, an intimate and tactile job. Often meeting with the makers, themselves to discuss display arrangements. A yearning had begun, a yearning to be a part of this creative world.
In 2014, James acquired his first studio space in Adelaide Currie Street and began making the change towards becoming a painter. Although, his early work showed promise, he undertook further training with acclaimed artist Tony Smibert, who taught him the technical skills necessary to develop his ideas, translate them and execute them in a disciplined manner. This fundamental training assisted James to enhance his creative development and consolidate his knowledge of new techniques. James believes that the treasures and objects that he has selected for this new series of paintings are not necessarily valuable or pretty, but they have meant something to someone, family or a part of history. He believes that there is always a a thread, a dialogue between them a sentiment that he hopes reaches the viewer.

The Strand Gallery is delighted to show recent paintings by this internationally renowned artist. Richard’s work is hung in private and public galleries around the world and the paintings are highly collectable. This collection focuses on the Fleurieu and includes remarkable images from sometimes unremarkable subjects. Some pieces border on super realism whilst others are impressionistic renderings that bring life to ‘everyday’ scenes.
Richard’s deft brushwork can impart personality to a Stobie pole.

Living in the Fleurieu Peninsula has deepened my relationship to the natural world. Daily sightings of kangaroos and bird life have caught my attention, resulting in the desire to visually bring them closer, to connect and develop the understanding that human animals and non-human animals are sentient beings with the ability to perceive and feel things.

A series of new works created by Merrilyn Stock, Lecturer of Ceramics, Drawing andArt History at Adelaide College of the Arts Merrilyn has won the Sydney Myer Australia Day Ceramics Award, Shepparton Art Gallery, Victoria and is collected nationally and internationally. Merrilyn has worked on archaeological digs in Thailand and Cambodia for the Art Gallery of South Australia as a ceramic adviser for the Department of Archaeology in Cambodia.
In her close observation of the botanical and geological forms along the Fleurieu Peninsula since a child, Merrilyn has produced unique ceramics using sophisticated techniques and firing at high temperature. This has produced a depth of detail in her work with delicate patterns and textures. Her series of ceramics ‘Gifts from the Sea’ are about her research into echinoderms (sea urchins), of which fossils have been
found from the Cambrian period approximately 150 million years ago.
This exhibition will continue right through the summer season with over 80 Fleurieu artists and 218 small works. It has provided the artists with an opportunity to experiment with new techniques, prepare studies for large paintings and to meet the challenge of working to a small scale.
